If you are a practicing beekeeper or are interested in learning beekeeping, you may be interested to know that there are a number of scholarships available for beekeeping.
What is a Beekeeping Scholarship?
When it comes to scholarships, some of the most specialized, and perhaps some of the most interesting are beekeeping scholarships. Targeted specifically for individuals who have been practicing beekeeping or who are looking into practicing beekeeping, these scholarships can vary in the type, as well as in the amount of award offered.
Most beekeeping scholarships are offered by individual groups and organizations either on a local or on a regional level. Some of them are actual academic scholarships; monies offered to college or grad-school students who are studying apiculture (beekeeping) or sometimes animal husbandry. Others, however, cover the cost of tuition – not for a regular college or university, but for beekeeping courses and conferences that are offered at specialized schools, and many of the prizes include not only tuition to these courses, but prizes of bees and hives and equipment that can help the beginning beekeeper establish their business.
Some Popular Beekeeping Scholarships
The Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees offers scholarships to five graduate students each year who are studying apiculture. Scholarship amounts are $2,000 each. The Foundation also awards a number of student’s free attendance to the annual North American Beekeeping Conference.
An example of a local scholarship for coverage of a course on beekeeping can be found in New Jersey. The NJBA (New Jersey Beekeepers Association) offers a scholarship to select students to cover the cost of a beekeeping course at a local college. Many states have programs such as this in place.
For those serious about studying the art of beekeeping, there are International Grants for undergraduate, graduate and PhD students to enable them to study abroad and learn some of the finer techniques of beekeeping; specifically beekeeping and how it can help to revitalize poverty stricken areas. The Beekeeping for Poverty Alleviation – Universiteit Gent: VLIR-UOS Scholarships are an example of this type of study program.
