Brain Injury Scholarships
Injuries to the brain are nothing to sneeze at. In fact, brain injuries can seriously impair a person’s life. Every year hundreds of individuals suffer from illnesses and injuries that result in brain injury. Sometimes these injuries are temporary and can be overcome through proper treatment. But sometimes the injuries are permanent and the person’s life will never be the same again. Having suffered from a brain injury, however, does not mean that you will never be able to attend college. In fact, there are a number of scholarship and benefit programs in place that can be used to help you get the education that you have always wanted.
About Brain Injuries
Brain injuries occur when the brain becomes damaged through illness or injury. Automobile accidents, sporting accidents, falls or severe shaking or beatings can all result in brain injury. While sometimes these injuries can be treated, other times there is no recovering. Regardless, there are a number of programs in place to help defray the expenses if you are looking at going to college.
What Kinds of Scholarships are There?
Scholarships for those with brain injuries – especially those with permanent brain injuries usually fall firmly under the umbrella of “disabilities scholarships.” Most of these sorts of scholarships are offered by the individual schools and universities who may have their own requirements as to who is eligible to put in for them. Regardless, it can’t hurt to inquire at your financial aid office over the kinds of scholarships that are given out by your college for those with disabilities and whether or not your particular condition makes you an eligible candidate.
Then of course there are private organizations and corporations that also offer scholarships for brain injuries. Take the BIADC for example. the BIADC offers A Grant Program Education fund from which they pay for a number of scholarships every year. These monies can be used by those who have suffered from brain injury and who now want to go back to school. You can find more information about BIADC here: BIADC Grant Program Education
If you have suffered severe or permanent brain injury, you should also know that you most likely qualify for disability benefits from the government as well. While these benefits may not take the form of actual scholarships, they can cut costs in areas such as housing, transportation, food and medical costs, and the money that you save can be used towards furthering your education and paying for your program out of pocket. For more information, please see: Disabilities .GOV.
Of course just because you have suffered from a brain injury does not mean that you can only put in for disability scholarships. You can also put in for academic scholarships as well as those that are based off of gender or athletic abilities. The choices really do seem to be endless.
