Musical theater scholarshipsIf you are involved in or studying musical theater, you may want to consider applying for one of the scholarships tailored specifically for those interested in musical theater.

What Types of Musical Theater Scholarships are There?

For those students looking to study musical theater, there are a limited number of scholarships to choose from, but first, don’t limit yourself by only applying for musical theater scholarships!

Musical Theater is only one aspect of the performing arts, and there are dozens upon dozens of performing arts scholarships, so be certain that in addition to applying for any musical theater-specific scholarships that you also apply for scholarships in the performing arts.

That being said, there are a number of scholarships tailored specifically for musical theater students.  Some of these scholarships come from individual college or universities (and are usually awarded through the performing arts or theater department) while others are offered by (usually) local or regional groups, organizations or foundations that wish to encourage the study of musical theater.

Not all awards of Musical Theater Scholarships are monetary.  Many times they involve being given a role or training in a particular community musical theater or tickets to that theater’s productions.

Popular Scholarships for Musical Theater

The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival Musical Theatre Award gives college and university students the chance to have their original work recognized and performed by the public.  Winners receive $1,000 awards for the music, the lyrics, and the book and for the college staging the production.

Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies Inc. offers a yearly $1,500 award to one initiated members of SAI who is studying Musical Theater.

The Donna Reed Foundation for the Performing Arts’ Annual Workshops and Scholarship Program provides financial support of up to $3,000 for students in a number of artistic enterprises.  The student must be able to perform in the Donna Reed Workshop.

An example of a community Musical Theater who awards a scholarship that is for students to become a part of their company is The Ron Cisneros Musical Theatre Scholarship.  The award includes training and inclusion in the Ron Cisneros Musical Theater.
