VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Scholarships have long been a coveted award for not only is it of financial help, it comes with the backing of the VFW who are held in high regard across the country.    And here’s the good news; contrary to popular belief, you do NOT have to be the child of a Veteran in order to be eligible for a VFW scholarship!

Any child is eligible to apply for (and win) a VFW scholarship and there are Three VFW Scholarships available.  All three are essay based and lean strongly (and understandably) towards patriotism.

First, there is the Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition.  This is an Audio Essay Contest.  There is an annual theme on which the applicants must write their essay.  They must then read their essay aloud; making an audio recording.  These essays are judged on the local, state and national levels and prizes are awarded at each level with the final winner receiving $30,000 towards tuition at the college of their choice.

Secondly, there is The Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest.  This contest is for children in grades 6-8.  This is similar to the Voice of Democracy Scholarship except that winners receive savings bonds between $1,000 – $16,000 dollars to be used for educational purposes later down the road.

Finally there is the VFW Scout of the Year Scholarship.  This scholarship is aimed specifically at the Boy Scouts of America and applicants are required to have received a Venture Scouting Silver Award, Sea Scout Quartermaster Award, or the Boy Scout Eagle Award in order to be considered for the scholarship.  Awards are in the amount of $1,000 each year and the specifications for the award vary depending upon consideration.

The Ladies Auxiliary VFW also has a number of  scholarships as well aimed specifically at girls (to counter the Scout of the Year awards) as well as awards based on Art and a Continuing Education scholarship for those members and their families looking to further their education.
